What do these numbers tell you?

LUFS and RMS

Integrated LUFS measures gated, frequency-weighted loudness over the file. RMS measures its average signal energy without that weighting. They answer different questions, so their numbers need not match.

Peaks and headroom

Sample peak is the largest stored sample. A reconstructed signal can peak between samples, which is why the meter also estimates true peak. Headroom is not proof that an earlier recording never clipped.

Measure, then listen

A louder file is not automatically a better master. Compare at matched listening volume and check transients, vocal balance and distortion. These readings do not rate artistic or mastering quality.

How the meter works

Integrated loudness uses BS.1770-style K-weighting, 400 ms blocks and absolute and relative gating. True peak uses 4× windowed-sinc interpolation. This browser meter is an estimate, not a certified delivery meter.

PCM WAV is analyzed at its source sample rate. Other supported formats are decoded at 48 kHz; browser decoding and resampling can affect peaks. Very short or near-silent files may not produce a gated loudness reading.
